Strength is only
half the story.

A general commands the field. A spy defeats every officer. A private brings the spy down. Even the smallest piece can change your plan.

Meet all fifteen ranks

The quietest threat.

A spy defeats every officer, but loses to a private. Two spies are hidden in each army.

One square at a time.
A whole game of possibilities.

The moves are simple. Reading your opponent’s plan is where it gets interesting.

Set your secret formation.

Arrange 21 pieces in your nearest three rows. Save a favorite, shuffle a new plan, or make a few last adjustments.

Move. Challenge. Remember.

Move one square in any straight direction. Challenge an enemy to discover who holds the square. Their rank stays hidden.

Make your way to the flag.

Capture theirs, or bring yours to the farthest row and survive their next turn. Every piece has a part to play.

Earlier additions

The 15 October 2.0.7 gameplay update added these improvements.

  • Landscape and a larger boardExpand web matches and replays to use the available space. Rotate to landscape while keeping the board and its controls within reach.
  • A match found stays in viewAccept or decline from a focused prompt wherever you are browsing. Both decisions stay visible on small screens and in landscape.
  • Keep track of your searchThe search counter stays visible while you browse Rankings. Resume search takes you directly back to the search already running.
  • Shared player activitySee online, in-game or last-online activity in Friends, player profiles and rankings when a friend chooses to share it. Private activity stays private.
  • Marching cuesA short drumroll welcomes you, with marching cues as a match begins. Match-found and result sounds respect your Sound setting.

The 10 October Friends update and earlier releases added these improvements.

  • Keep friends in viewSending a friend request keeps the selected player visible with its pending status, so you can still open their profile.
  • Profiles without a bio on AndroidPlayer profiles open even when the player has not added a bio. Refreshing Friends keeps the player you found and the profile you are viewing.
  • Keep your sign-in through interruptionsTemporary connection problems, busy sign-in servers and unexpected responses will no longer unnecessarily sign you out while your session recovers.
  • Return to the right accountSession recovery stays with the account you are using. Older sign-in attempts cannot replace a newer sign-in or restore an account after you sign out.
  • Clearer sign-in forms on iPhone and iPadTap Done above the keyboard to dismiss it and reach Sign in. Submitting from the keyboard also dismisses it.
  • Profile edits on AndroidProfile edits now save reliably and keep your avatar. Save a new bio or clear it without losing your current picture.
  • Learn at your own paceTry guided board, formation and rank activities without an account. Skip the introduction when you are ready to play, and return to Learn any time.
  • More room for the boardExpand the game or replay for a closer view. Clocks, match actions and replay controls stay within reach.
  • Plan your next moveYour opponent’s move finishes before a premove plays. Queue one on mobile or as many as you need on desktop; right-click clears your desktop plans. If a plan becomes invalid, a brief explanation clears itself.
  • A more tactile setupHear the familiar piece sound as you arrange an army or apply a formation. Sound follows your mute setting.
  • Explore while we searchMinimize your search, visit another tab, then return from the search indicator. Accept a found match when you are ready, or cancel the search. A missed Accept stops the search instead of starting another one.
  • Native on iPhone and iPadTouch controls, sound and haptics, with guest practice that works offline and needs no account.
  • Flat or Metal 3DSwitch between a clean flat board and Metal 3D, with a camera choice in matches and deployment.
  • More ways to playPremoves, board annotations, reactions in online matches and the full rank guide.
  • Walnut boardA warm timber finish, sold as an optional one-time purchase in the iPhone and iPad app. Preview it with your own pieces first.
